Hello all! For the past few days we have spent our time in Las Terrenas, a town on the coast of the Dominican Republic. Las Terrenas is a beautiful, vibrant community with a strong sense of pride and resilience. While we were there, we had the opportunity to participate in some service learning projects intended to help improve the lives of locals in need. Yesterday, we said goodbye to the families we were staying with and made our way to […]

We just arrived last night in Dominican Republic. After preparing the Alex 2 for our port arrival by furling the sails, we had a nice time at the early all hands meeting this morning. Now students are excited to get to go out and discover what Dominican Republic has to offer! Two Photos: Please enjoy a nice picture of the Alex 2 and a plane taken in St-Martin and another one of the view from where we are docked at […]

The day after a shore leave quite often sees a “low energy funk” descend on the ship.   Yesterday’s was especially spectacular; with too much sun, sea and barbecue ribs compounded by a late night „All hands“ departure in the rain from Grand Case, Saint Martin. Some watches even had to stay on for an extra 40 minutes at 04.00 in the morning to help the next watch complete a Haltze. The affected watch only complained about this about once […]

We had an amazing day at St Martin’s, on the French side, which included swimming lots, eating amazing food and some people did shopping in the boutiques. We we’re all set to sail through the Drake Passage by the US and British Virgin Islands. Watch 6 saw a weird whale that looked a little like a hot dog swimming besides the boat. Classes are back to normal, and everyone is getting more used to their new schedule. We also celebrated Medeine’s birthday by dunking cold water at her at 8 […]

Today we continued our sail from Dominica to St. Martin (a surprise port!). We started out too fast on our sail but today we were able to level out and get a perfect speed. The whole day we were surrounded by different Caribbean Islands with vast mountains and lots of trees. It was a relaxing day for most watches, only having to worry about helm and lookout, no maneuvers:) Everyone is excited for St. Martin and a day off from […]

This morning, after colours and chores, everyone got ready for a day of hiking. We got on buses and headed about 2 hours away from the ship to the Morne Trois Piton National Park. We hiked an hour through the rainforest seeing a variety of fruit trees, and bugs and learned about many different plants that are growing in this islands forests until we reached the waterfall. A 200ft waterfall with a water bassin bellow was a perfect spot to […]

Welcome to Waitukubuli! (Know to us as Dominica) Today was our first day at shore! We started off our day with breakfast, Colours, and chores, like everyday. From there we went on an adventure, starting with: Watch Olympics! While waiting for everyone to get a Zodiacs to shore floaties swam, threw American footballs and went crab hunting. When we were all together and set up, Raf animated a wonderful morning of Tug-of-war, a relay race and a Baywatch-run competition for […]

Yesterday we arrived in Dominica at around 12pm. We are surrounded by green hills topped with clouds and beautiful blue sea. The land looks so amazing from out here, and we all can’t wait to get ashore to explore it more.    Just as everyone was getting into their new watch schedules, we dropped anchor and took the afternoon off. We were fortunate enough for a swim call in the sunshine for our hard work so far. The students were excited to […]
